Shipping – A Quick Guide

Shipping allows you as the merchant to configure specific shipping charges, which will be added to purchases made from your online store. Configuring your Shipping settings within your MonsterPay account will not only allow for itemized billing, but will also allow you to concentrate on your business, rather than spending time calculating shipping information.

Types of Shipping:[index]

There are several Shipping Methods, each allowing you to customize your shipping specifications to your business needs.
Flat Rate per Basket

Flat rate per Basket assigns a single shipping fee, regardless of the contents of a shipment.
The following fields are required in order for Flat Rate per Basket to be implemented:
Field Name Required Description
LIDPrice Yes The actual price of the product that is being sold.
Please include the cent value in decimal format.
LIDQty Yes Quantity of products.
Default is 1 (one) ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are:
1 for Yes 0 for N
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N

The Flat Rate per Basket Shipping Option matches the shipment’s shipping / billing address with a location that has been specified for the selected Shipping Method. The shipping fee is then calculated accordingly, and added to the shipment as the shipping value.

Flat Rate per Item
Flat Rate per Item assigns a single shipping fee to each item added to the shipment.
The following fields are required in order for Flat Rate per Item to be implemented:
Field Name Required Description
LIDPrice Yes The actual price of the product that is being sold.
Please include the cent value in decimal format.
LIDQty Yes Quantity of products.
Default is 1 (one) ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are:
1 for Yes 0 for N
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N

The Flat Rate per Item Shipping Option matches the shipment’s shipping / billing address with a location that has been specified for the selected Shipping Method. The shipping fee is calculated by multiplying the matching Shipping Option’s fixed rate by the total amount of line items in the shipment and is then added to the shipment as the shipping value.

Matrix by Cost

Matrix by Cost calculates the shipping fee based upon the total cost of the shipment.
The following fields are required in order for Matrix by Cost to be implemented:

Field Name Required Description
LIDPrice Yes The actual price of the product that is being sold.
Please include the cent value in decimal format.
LIDQty Yes Quantity of products.
Default is 1 (one) ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are:
1 for Yes 0 for N
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N

The shipping fee for the basket is based on the total cost of the shipment. The total cost of the shipment is calculated by multiplying the cost of each line item with the quantity specified and then totalling the line items.
The total cost of the shipment is then matched to the Shipping Option Matrix that has been configured for the selected Shipping Method, based on the shipment’s shipping / billing address. The matching Shipping Option’s fee is then added to the shipment as the shipping value.

Matrix by Quantity
Matrix by quantity calculates the shipping fee based upon the quantity per line item in the shipment.
The following fields are required to be passed through to MonsterPay in order for Matrix by Quantity to function:

Field Name Required Description
LIDPrice Yes The actual price of the product that is being sold.
Please include the cent value in decimal format.
LIDQty Yes Quantity of products.
Default is 1 (one) ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are:
1 for Yes 0 for N
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N

The shipping fee for the basket is based on the total quantity of items in the shipment, which is calculated by totalling the line items.
The total quantity of the items in the shipment is then matched to the Shipping Option Matrix that has been configured for the selected Shipping Method based on the shipment’s shipping / billing address. The matching Shipping Option’s fee is then added to the shipment as the shipping value.

Matrix by Volume
Matrix by Volume calculates the shipping fee based upon the total volume of a shipment.
The following fields are required in order for Matrix by Volume to be implemented.

The Shipping fee for the basket is based on the total volume of the shipment. The total volume of the shipment is calculated by multiplying the (LIDHeight X LIDWidth X LIDLength) X LIDQty of each line item, and adding the volume of each line item together in order to calculate the total volume of the shipment. The total volume of the shipment is then matched to the sliding scale of volumes that has been configured for the selected Shipping Method, based on the shipment’s shipping/billing address. The matching Shipping Option’s fixed rate is then added to the shipment as the shipping value.

Matrix by Weight
Matrix by Weight calculates the shipping fee based upon the total weight of a shipment

The following fields are required in order for Matrix by Weight to be implemented:

Field Name Required Description
LIDPrice Yes The actual price of the product that is being sold.
Please include the cent value in decimal format.
LIDQty Yes Quantity of products.
Default is 1 (one) ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are:
1 for Yes 0 for N
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N

The shipping fee for the basket is based on the total weight of the shipment. The total weight of the shipment is calculated by multiplying the LIDWeight with the LIDQty for each line item and totalling the weight of the line items in order to calculate the total weight of the shipment.
The total weight of the shipment is then matched to the Shipping Option Matrix that has been configured for the selected Shipping Method based on the shipment’s shipping / billing address. The matching Shipping Option’s fee is then added to the shipment as the shipping value.

Volumetric Shipping

Volumetric Weight or Dimensional (Dim) weight calculates the shipping fee based upon the amount of space that the shipment will consume in an aircraft, ship or vehicle.

LIDHeight Yes Product height used for calculating volumetric shipping.
LIDWidth Yes Product width used for calculating volumetric shipping.
LIDLength Yes Product length used for calculating volumetric shipping.
ShippingRequired Yes Is shipping required for this product? Valid options are: 1 for Yes 0 for N

The shipping fee for the basket is based on the volumetric weight of the shipment. In order to calculate the volumetric weight for the entire shipment, we first have to calculate the volume of the total shipment, which is calculated as follows: (LIDWidthx LIDHeight x LIDLength) x LIDQty. This is completed for each line item. The volume of each line item is then totalled to calculate the total volume of the shipment.
In order to calculate the volumetric weight of the shipment, the total volume of the shipment is divided by the commodity rate, which is specified by the Shipping Option Matrix for the volumetric Shipping Method. (Total volume / commodity rate = volumetric weight of shipment).
The volumetric weight of the shipment is then matched to the Shipping Option Matrix that has been configured for the selected Shipping Method, based on the shipment’s shipping / billing address. The matching Shipping Option’s fee is then added to the shipment as the shipping value.

After you’ve entered all information, simply click “Done” to complete the configuration. Your Shipping Type is now working and available to your buyers.

Note: If you did not select to make use of the default base / commodity and fee, then your Shipping Method will not work. You will first need to specify a Shipping Option.

Advanced Options[index]

To view an existing Shipping Type, select it by clicking on its name, description, method or pencil icon beside it. The advanced options allow you to modify an existing Shipping Method.
It allows you to change the name, description, default commodity / base and or fee, enable universal / global shipping, and add or remove specific Shipping Options.
image0003
Note: All of the fields, except for your Shipping Type’s Shipping Method can be changed if needed. If you have created your shipping using the incorrect Shipping Method then you will need to delete the entire Shipping Type and create a new one using the correct Shipping Method.

The following fields can be edited:
  • Name: The name of your Shipping Type
  • Description: The description of your Shipping Type
  • Use Universal Option: Specifies if you wish to have a default fee for this Shipping Type which will be utilized for all countries

In addition to editing the Shipping Type you can also add a Shipping Option, as outlined below.

Shipping Options[index]

A Shipping Option is a specific instance in which your Shipping Method will be applied. You may add Shipping Options under an existing Shipping Method. A Shipping Option allows you to specify a country, state, city and zip code for which the Shipping Method (and its associated fees) will be applied, e.g. if you wish to charge a different fee for buyers from Mongolia, you can create a Shipping Option accordingly.

You will need to use “Shipping Options” to create a Shipping Option Matrix that will allow the Shipping Method to function correctly (i.e. Matrix by Cost, Matrix by Quantity, Matrix by Volume, Matrix by Weight and Volumetric).

A Shipping Option is composed of a minimum of 5 fields:
  • Country *: The country for which this fee is to be applied.
  • State: The state, if any, for which this fee is to be applied. Leave this field empty if this option is for any state within the country.
  • City: The city, if any, for which this fee is to be applied. Leave this field empty if this option is for any city within the state.
  • Zip Code: The zip code, if any, for which this fee is to be applied. Leave this field empty if this option is for any zip code within the city.
  • Base / Commodity / Fee*: The values – based on your Shipping Method – which will be used for this specific Shipping Option.
* Required fields.

In addition to the above fields, a Shipping Method which utilizes a Matrix (i.e. Quantity, Weight, Volume, Cost or Volumetric shipping) will also have a base unit as well as infinity.
  • Base Unit: The Base Unit used for matrix calculations.
  • Commodity: The Commodity value - used in Volumetric Shipping.
  • Infinity: Specifies whether the Shipping Options’ base unit is counted from the base unit to infinity. (The last field of a matrix is always set to Infinity)
After you have added the Shipping Option, you will see it listed under the Shipping Type in the Advanced Options section where you can edit its values or remove it.

Setting up a Matrix of Shipping Options

After you have created a Shipping Method for Volumetric or Matrix based shipping, you will need to configure the values utilized by the Shipping Method to calculate the correct amount charged to the buyer.

Every formula follows an approach whereby it increments both the Base Unit and the Fee. For simplicity sake, the higher the base unit (either in number, price, weight or space) the higher the fee charged, or if the buyer is making a considerably large purchase, a discount (or even free shipping) can be offered.

Example:
The company Sample Books, which sells hand-bound books online, created a Shipping Option in order to calculate their shipping fees automatically. As their chosen shipping company charges shipping fees based on the weight of a package, Sample Books decide to use a Matrix by Weight Shipping Option.

The Shipping Method created by Sample Books is shown below:
image0004
They then created a Shipping Option Matrix to precisely calculate their shipping fees within the borders of their country (Argentina).
image0005
Research into their purchase history showed that their average online purchase size is two books, which roughly weigh a combined 500 grams. They therefore configure a matrix which specifies that anyone with a purchase weight of 0 to 500 grams will be charged a shipping fee of $20. For purchases weighing between 500 grams and 1 kilogram, buyers will be charged $30 and for any purchases with a weight exceeding 1 kilogram, buyers will be charged $40. (i.e. any purchase that weighs between one kilogram and infinity kilograms) Sample Books chooses not to specify shipping for specific provinces or cities in their country, as their shipping company does not take these details into account when calculating shipping fees. They proceed to adjust each of their product’s LIDWeight value / base value (500/2) to show in grams, as per their Shipping Option Matrix configuration ( which represents 250 grams) They do not perform any additional configuration for shipping to countries outside of Argentina, as they decide to set a flat-rate of $40 for all international shipments.

Frequently Asked Questions[index]

How is Shipping calculated on my products?
Shipping is calculated differently based on each Shipping Type. For more information please view Section 1.

How many Shipping Types can I utilize on a single basket?
Although you are allowed to add more than one Shipping Type, a buyer will be allowed to choose only one Shipping Option.

What is a Handling Charge or Handling Surcharge?
A Handling Charge or Surcharge is an additional charge, which you may add to the Shipping fee. This charge represents costs undertaken by the merchant to package the purchased goods and to prepare the purchase for shipment.

Where do I set my Handling Surcharge
The Handling Surcharge may be set separately in the “Setup Handling” section, under the ‘Collect on Web” tab. The Handling Surcharge is set once for each available currency and you do not need to set a Handling Surcharge for each Shipping Method.

How is Volumetric Shipping Calculated?
The following formula is used to calculate the Volumetric Shipping: Total volume / commodity rate = volumetric weight of shipment

What is Universal Shipping the Universal Fee, the Global Fee or the Default Fee?
The Universal Shipping Option allows you to impose the shipping fee on any countries not currently specified in the Shipping Type. If for example you have a flat-rate for any shipping globally, you need merely enable Universal Shipping, and it will be applied to all your buyers, instead of forcing you to add the same shipping amount for each and every country in the world.

What happens if I do not wish to use the Universal Fee?
If you do not use the Universal Fee, shipping will only be calculated for countries configured under your Shipping Options. If you have for example only specified South Africa in the Shipping Option, someone with a delivery address which is not listed as South Africa will not be given the Shipping Option.

What is the Base Unit?
The Base Unit is the measurement which your Shipping Method will use to determine which price to levy on the purchased goods for shipping. The Base Unit can be Cost, Weight, Volume or Quantity.

What value do I put in the Base Unit?
The Base Unit is determined by the Shipping Method you select, i.e. the total cost of the basket, the total quantity of purchased goods, the total volume of the purchased goods, or the total weight. The second aspect is the measurement of the selected commodity the base unit represents. It is important to remember that the Base Unit’s value is created and set by you, the merchant, and therefore you need to conform to your own standard to make the Base Unit functional and ensure that this standard is reflected in both your products and your shipping in MonsterPay.

Example: Sample Books are shipping their books by weight. The average book in their inventory weighs 0.25 kilograms. Since the Base Unit does not function with fractions, Sample Books opts to measure their books in grams, instead of kilograms. To reflect this they store each book’s weight in grams (250g instead of 0.25kg): .

However this is only the first part, they will need to match this form of measurement in their Shipping Option, with a Base Unit of 250. I want to implement a Matrix by Weight but when I make a test purchase the Shipping does not add the Shipping. What am I doing wrong? You need to ensure that your weight unit for your products matches that of your shipping. Most importantly you will need to ensure that you have given your products a weight value on your website before your buyer attempts to purchase the product. Please view the Method requirements for more information, and remember to read up on the MonsterPay Implementation Guide to ensure you know how you can use MonsterPay for your e-commerce needs.
