Why can chargebacks occur so long after a seller receives the payment?

According to the policies of credit card issuing companies, buyers are usually allowed to file chargebacks weeks, or sometimes even months, after the initial transaction occurs. As such, a seller may encounter a temporary hold on funds in their MonsterPay account for a transaction that occurred weeks or months ago.
